Vernell Wells Obituary

Hinesville – Vernell “Nell” Stanley Wells, affectionately known by many as MaNell, 77, passed from this world into her eternal home with Jesus on October 4, 2024 after an extended illness.

Mrs. Wells was born on July 4, 1947 in the English Eddy community of Toombs County, GA to C.J. and Ethel Stanley. She moved to Liberty County in 1967 to take a job at Ft. Stewart and was introduced by friends to a young man named Jiley Wells, whom she married less than a year later. She and Jiley were married for 52 years before his passing in 2019.

She is survived by her children, Carson (Michal) Wells of Ludowici, Daniel (Julie) Wells of Ludowici, and Laura Wells of Glennville, by her grandchildren Ethan Wells and Cora Wells of Ludowici, a sister Linda Peacock of Commerce, GA, two brothers, Lloyd (Rosa) Stanley of Lynn Haven, FL, and Joseph (Brenda) Stanley of Lyons, and numerous beloved nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, Jiley Wells, her parents, C.J. and Ethel Stanley, a brother, Charlie Ray Stanley, and two sisters, Colous DiNardo and Jean Oldag.

Mrs. Wells was a long-time member of Elim Baptist Church where she served in many capacities over the years. She was retired from the Liberty County School System, where she was instrumental in the opening of Liberty County Middle/High School. After retirement she also worked for several years as a receptionist for H&R Block in Hinesville. Her favorite activity was anything pertaining to Ethan and baseball. She rarely missed a game or a tournament and was his biggest fan… and not just in baseball. She also enjoyed any time spent with family and friends, particularly when good food was involved. Her fried shrimp and crab stew were renowned in the community as the best!

Mrs. Wells will be missed beyond measure by her family and friends. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to her special caretakers who cared for her in her final days, the staffs of the offices of Dr. Ryan Wanamaker and Dr. Andrew Carney, retired Dr. Christopher Kuettner, and the staff of Compassus Hospice.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, October 8 at 1 PM at Elim Baptist Church with Rev. Austin Burgess and Rev. Michael Howard officiating.  Visitation will be Monday, October 7 from 6-8 PM at Elim Baptist Church.

Active pallbearers will be Luke Wells, Ethan Williams, Trevor Ray, Trey Barrett, Cale Crane, and Dawson Wells.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances are requested to be made to Elim Baptist Church, Ludowici, Ga.
