Ludowici – Leland Edward “Pete” Hinely, Jr., 82, of Ludowici, Georgia, passed away at his home on September 16, 2025, while under hospice care. With him was his wife, Sue, and his longtime friend Ron Huncke. Pete was born on June 5, 1942, at The Telfair Women’s Hospital in Savannah, Georgia. He spent his formative years growing up in Richmond Hill. He attended St Anne’s Catholic Church, where he served as an altar boy and received his first communion. He preferred to be outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He built his own shrimp boat and loved being on the water. Working in his garden was also a passion of his. Pete was a proud Army veteran who joined the Army in 1962 and served for 24 years, retiring as a 1SG. He served two tours in Vietnam and especially enjoyed being assigned to Ansbach, Germany, and Camp Zama, Japan, where he forged strong, life-long friendships. He truly enjoyed showing his “Brats” the world. He received many awards, but none as important to him as the Army Aviation Association of America Soldier of the Year for USAREUR (Europe) in 1979. He received worldwide recognition as the AAAA Soldier of the Year for the entire Army in 1979. Upon his retirement in 1986, he returned to his South Georgia roots, eventually calling Long County home. He worked for 9 years as a contractor with Logis-tech. Eventually, he turned his love of woodworking into a business, spending hours restoring antiques and building one-of-a-kind furniture. Pete was a member of St. Stephen's Catholic Church of Hinesville for 22 years, serving as head usher for several of those years. Pete is preceded in death by his parents, Leland Edward, Sr, and Juanita Hinely, beloved sister Gloria Becton, and nephew Ralph Disque.
He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Sue; children, Whitney Hinely Householder (Barry) of Jesup, Meredith Hinely (Rennie) of Jesup, and Leland Edward Hinely, III of Hinesville. His stepchildren, Carrie Marks (Tom) of Ladies Island, SC, Elizabeth Barnett (Terrell) of Long County, and Michael Barnett (Samantha) of Long County. Eleven grandchildren and one great-grandson. He is also survived by his niece, Jennifer, and his nephews, Mark, Ronnie, John, and Jason.
There will be a memorial mass held on Saturday, September 20, 2025, at 1:00 pm at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church.
Due to the exceptional love and care by the staff of GHC Hospice, and in lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to GHC Hospice, 141 S. Macon Street, Jesup, GA 31545.
