James Barksdale Simpson III, 75, of Saint Simons, GA passed away surrounded by loved ones on March 17th, 2022, after a long battle with Parkinson’s. James (Jim) was born on May 17, 1946, to Madeline and James Simpson in Jesup, GA. He was baptized at Hinesville First Baptist in 1956. He has actively served the Lord since that time in a variety of capacities including being a Sunday School director and a youth leader. Jim was one of the first to be signed by a division one team. He was a proud Gamecock for two years. Although his football career only lasted two years, he had a lifetime love for all athletic events. He was actively involved in several local recreation departments. He was one of the driving forces in creating the football team for the recreation department for Long County. On August 31, 1968, Jim married his lifelong neighbor that he met at church and found his perfect dancing partner. Watching them dance was a true testimony of their love. They had three children, six grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. He loved to go to their events and could often be heard bragging about his children and grandchildren. Jim had an extensive work history in Real Estate. He worked as a broker and then he joined the Corps of Engineers. During his time with the Corps, he was awarded multiple awards. He was perhaps most proud of his award from the Department of Navy for Meritorious Civilian Service in Bahrain. His time with the Corps afforded him the opportunity to travel extensively around the world. He loved living a life of adventure. His favorite destination was when he lived in Vicenza, Italy for five years. What made it so enjoyable was the fact that his wife Suzette was able to be with him James was a force of nature, determined to provide for his family and give them the life he felt they deserved. His family meant more to him than anything else in the world, something he often mentioned. Anyone who knew James knew that he was a loving father and spouse. James was predeceased by his mother, Madeline, his father James.
Survivors are his wife of 53 years, Suzette Wheeler Simpson of St. Simons Island; daughter, Amy Simpson of St. Simons Island; sons and daughters-in-law, Jay Simpson and Brandi of Huntley, IL, and Steven Simpson and Lisa Michalski of Sarasota, FL; sister, Sue Simpson Hock of Hinesville; grandchildren, Jesse Yancey (Jennifer), Kylie Dixon (Dan), Shane Wells, Madeline Simpson, Dennis Simpson, and Christopher Simpson; great-granddaughter, Macey Dixon; several nieces and nephews.
Celebration of Life Services will be Saturday, March 19, at 11 AM from Gum Branch Baptist Church with Dr. Tom Smiley officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church. Burial will be private.
