Ludowici – James “J. E.” Echols, 78, passed away Thursday, December 29, 2022, at his home under the care of his family and GHC Hospice. A native of Screven, he lived in Long County since 1984. He worked in construction, primarily sheetrock, all of his life. He enjoyed racing cars, and motorcycles, horseback riding, and listening to southern gospel music. An outdoorsman, he was known to “wrangle” a few rattlesnakes in his life. He was preceded in death by his parents, George, Sr. and Thelma Echols, along with his siblings, Beatrice, Gwen, Rebecca, Chiquita, George, Jr., and Lacy, and his son-in-law, Dale Davis.
Survivors are his wife, Judy Echols of Ludowici; daughters, Lisa Davis of Ludowici, and Tiffany Beltz and husband, Russ of Tarrs, PA; sons, Jeff Echols of Tarrs, PA and James Echols, II, of Jesup; sister, Marjorie Darsey and husband, Jerry of Statesboro; 15 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be Monday, January 2, at 11 AM in the Howard Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Byron Powers and Rev. Alan Darsey officiating.
Visitation will be one hour prior to services in the chapel.
