Hazel Woods Obituary

Hazel Ridgdill Woods, formerly of Savannah, passed away on October 2 in Waycross at the age of 89. Hazel was born to the late Annie Laura Arnold and Benjamin Harvey Ridgdill in Bulloch County on March 28, 1934. She lived in Chatham County for most of her life with homes both in Garden City and Tybee Island. After graduating from Savannah High School in 1951, she married the love of her life, Wallace H. Woods. They were happily married for 66 years. Soon after their wedding, Hazel began working as a receptionist for the Union Camp Corporation where she was employed for over thirty years, eventually rising to the position of paymaster in the payroll accounting office. Hazel used her office as a notary public to serve her fellow friends and neighbors as a trusted witness and volunteered countless hours as a poll worker during elections. Both she and her husband, Wallace, were active members at Woodlawn United Methodist Church in Garden City where they took on many roles over the years. They later transferred their church membership to the Ludowici United Methodist Church when they moved to Long County in 2007. Hazel was preceded in death by her husband Wallace Woods and her son-in-law, Major Robert Cahill.

Survivors include her daughter Ann Michele Cahill of Ludowici; son Wallace Woods, Jr. and daughter-in-law Susan Pierce Woods of Cleveland, GA; sister Dorothy Roughen of Durham, North Carolina; and brother Benjamin Ridgdill, Jr. of Shellman’s Bluff. Her grandchildren include Dr. Laura Cahill, Lisa Cahill, Lindsey Cahill Green, Dr. Wallace Woods III, David Woods, and Katheryn Woods Hatch. She also leaves behind great-grandchildren Liam & Woods Declan Woods, and Henry Hatch; Ruth Hatch as well as nephew Dr. Patrick Roughen and niece Dr. Kevin Roughen Thompson.

A graveside service will be held in the Greenwich section of Bonaventure Cemetery on Saturday, Oct. 7 at 10:00 AM where Hazel will be laid to rest beside her husband Wallace. Pallbearers include Dr. Patrick Roughen, Mark Munn, Dr. Wallace Woods III, David Woods, Sergeant First Class Mitchel Green, and Justin Hatch.
