Ludowici – Gary Philip Swindell, Sr., 85, passed away Sunday, August 24, 2025, in Savannah. Born in Jesup, he was a lifelong resident of Long County, was a farmer all his life, and served 16 years on the Long County Board of Education. He was a former member of First Baptist Ludowici, where he served as a deacon and with the church finances, and was currently a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Ludowici. He was preceded in death by his parents, J. Philip and Allyne Akins Swindell, and his brothers, Larry, Ronnie, Sr., and Michael Swindell.
Survivors are his wife of 59 years, Wanda R. Swindell of Ludowici; sons, Phil Swindell (Amy) of Ludowici, Guy Swindell (Susan) of Clinton, SC, and Shane Swindell (Lori) of Apalachicola, FL; special uncle, Gene Akins of Williamsburg, VA; sister-in-law, Ruthann Swindell of Ludowici; grandchildren, Philip Swindell (Eden), Riley Swindell, Alyssa Swindell, Andrew Swindell (fiancé, Spencer Wasdin), Sydney Lester (Brian), Lily Swindell, and Zachary Swindell (Rachel); great-grandchildren, Blakely and Matthew Lester; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 26, at 3 PM at First Baptist Church in Ludowici, with Rev. Eric Rentz, Rev. Brian Smith, and Rev. Philip Swindell officiating. Burial will follow in Rye Patch Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1:30 to 3 PM at the church.
Pallbearers will be Philip, Andrew, and Zachary Swindell, Brian Lester, Ronnie Brown, Raymond Fox, Twiman Garrason, and Derry Smiley.
