Ludowici – Garland L. Smith, 85, died Wednesday, November 25, 2020 at his home under the care of his family and GHC Hospice. Born in Broward County, FL, he lived in Long County most of his life. He was retired from Ft. Stewart Fire Department but spent most of his life farming the family land in Rye Patch. An avid horseman, he participated in shows for many years where he won numerous trophies and ribbons on the local and state level. He was a devoted family man and a US Air Force veteran. He was a member of Elim Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and helped oversee the construction of the new and larger sanctuary. He was preceded in death by his sister, Maxine Gaskin.
Survivors are his wife of sixty-three years, Mary Smith of Ludowici; daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Michael Barnes of Ludowici; sons and daughter-in-law, Steven Smith and James and Tammy Smith of Ludowici; grandchildren, Lee Sikes, Brandon (Whitney) Smith, and Madison Smith; great-grandchildren, Kinley and Blakely Smith; constant K9 companion, Lady Bug.
Funeral services will be Saturday, November 28 at 11 AM at Elim Baptist Church with Rev. Greg Bentley officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church.
Burial will follow in Rye Patch Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Clay Rowe, Daryl Gaskin, Dwayne Gaskin, David Garrason, Gerald Baxter and Revis Baxter.
Honorary pallbearers will be Twiman Garrason, Gary Swindell, Tommy Howard, Dave Morris, Ken Salter, Tom Ainsworth, John Cato, and Freeman Hinson.
