Townsend - Carl Anthony Poppell, Sr., 72, of McIntosh County, departed from his earthly home Sunday morning, January 5, 2025, at Southeast Georgia Health System. Carl was born August 25, 1952, in Jesup, Georgia to the late Lemmie Britton Poppell and Cecil Clifford Cox Poppell. He lived his entire life in McIntosh County. He was a commercial fisherman for more than 35 years. He was a member of the Georgia Marine Mammal Take Reduction Team and a former President of the Georgia Waterman’s Association. He was an avid fisherman and hunter for all his life. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend to many. His favorite hobby was being a jokester, and he loved to “pick”, but if he didn’t “pick” on you, that probably meant he didn’t like you.
Carl is survived by his wife of 53 years, Jacqueline LaVerne DeWitt Poppell. One daughter, Brandi Lorraine Poppell of Crescent, GA; one son, Carl Anthony Poppell, Jr. (Rosie) of Newberry, SC; six grandchildren, Nicholas Poppell, Lillian Poppell, Addy Poppell, Leilah Poppell, Marley Poppell, and Grayson Poppell; siblings, Sammy Poppell, Robert Poppell, Herman Poppell, Patricia Griffin (Ferrell), and David Poppell (Connie); several nieces, nephews, and other family members.
Carl was preceded in death by his three brothers, George Poppell, Clarence Poppell, Herbert Poppell, and one sister, Mary Jo Lane.
The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff who have cared for Carl recently and the years past as well.
There will be no official arrangements at this time, there will be a “celebration” as Carl requested at a later date.
Family and friends may sign the online register at www.howardfuneralga.com.
Arrangements are under the direction of Howard Funeral Home of Ludowici.
