Ludowici – Betty Lou Wildes, 77, died Thursday, April 1, 2021 at her home under the care of her family and Hospice of South Georgia. Born in Charlton County, she lived in Long County forty years. She retired as a bus driver from the Long County School System after thirty-six years of service and was a custodian for Ludowici First United Methodist Church for many years. She enjoyed growing plants and flowers at her home and time spent with family. She was preceded in death by her parents, Elder Sammie and Annie Bell Hendrix, son, Larry Wildes, and brother, Eugene Hendrix.
Survivors are her husband, Elton Poppell of Ludowici; daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Alviah Burkett of Douglas, and Patsy and Ray Cook of Waycross; sons and daughter-in-law, Lamar and Kathy Wildes of Gray and Robert Poppell of Ludowici; twelve grandchildren and twenty-eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Saturday, April 3 at 3 PM at Ludowici FUMC with Rev. Robert Long officiating. Burial will be in Corinth Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Charlton County.
Visitation will be at her residence on Butter Davis Road, SE, on Friday, April 2 beginning at 5 PM.
Active pallbearers will be Raymond, Jeffrey, Alexander, and Caleb Wildes, Devon Dale, John Drury, and Brandon Waters.
Honorary pallbearers will be Charles Stanfield, Tammy Alison, Mary Jane Poppell, and the staff of Hospice of South Georgia.
