Ludowici – James Alvin “Bear” Caines, 64, died suddenly at his home Tuesday, March 30, 2021. Born in Savanah, he was raised in Walthourville and lived in Long County most of his life. He began his law enforcement career with the Hinesville Police Department, later working several years with the Liberty County Sheriff’s Department. He retired from the Georgia Department of Corrections as an intensive probation officer after twenty-five years of service. He was an outdoorsman and a member of Hacks Pasture Hunting Club and Gum Branch Baptist Church.
Survivors are his wife of forty-three years, Denise Adams Caines of Gum Branch; daughter and son-in-law, Sarah and Leon Mizelle of Gum Branch; sons and daughters-in-law, James and Sabrina Caines of Ludowici and Rev. Joshua and Amanda Caines of Blythe; sister, Iris Caines of Tennessee; brother, Gilbert Caines of Ludowici; grandchildren, Elijah, Jonah, Tatum, Lee, and T. J.; father-in-law, Woody Adams of Gum Branch; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Friday, April 2 at 11 AM at Gum Branch Baptist Church with Rev. Joshua Caines officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to services in the church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Elijah Caines, Jonah Caines, Tyler Shackleford, Ryan Harrison, Leon Mizelle, Tatum Mizelle, and Mike Croft.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of Hacks Pasture Hunting Club and all public safety personnel in attendance.
