Hinesville – Don Moody, 70, passed away Monday, November 12, 2018 at Liberty Regional Medical Center after a sudden illness. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Jackie; daughter, Donna Belcher (Andy); grandsons, Owen, Logan and Ethan Belcher all of Vidalia; sister, Patty Griffith (Art) of Parkersburg, WV; sisters-in-law, Janice O’Neal (Troy), Joann Mummey (Bernard), and Janine Graham (Chuck); special nieces and nephew, Nora Beamon (A.J.), of Sunnyvale, CA, Jordan Graham, Amy Graham and Cody Graham; and a special great-niece, Hannah Beamon. He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Rena Moody; and a sister, Betty James.
Don was born May 8, 1948 in Parkersburg, WV and lived in Belpre, OH until he joined the Army in 1967. While in the Army, he served in Vietnam from November 1968 to November 1969. After being honorably discharged from the Army after 3 years, he eventually joined the Air National Guard. He proudly served on active duty with the 283rd Combat Communications Squadron in Savannah, GA until his retirement 20 years later in October 1996. During his time with the 283rd he deployed all over the world, setting up communication sites. Don was also with the Liberty County Sheriff’s Department 17 years before retiring.
He volunteered with the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, helped with clean up after the Flint River flood, Hurricane Hugo in Charleston and Hurricane Harvey in Texas. He was headed to Myrtle Beach with Disaster Relief when he got sick. He was an active member, deacon, Sunday school teacher and was known as Uncle Don to the youth of Gum Branch Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, November, 15 at 11:00 A.M. at the Gum Branch Baptist Church with Rev. Gabe Gill and Rev. John Barbee officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday, November 14 from 5-8 at Gum Branch Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the Gum Branch Church Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be members of the USAF Honor Guard.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Sr. Adult Men’s S.S. class, deacons of Gum Branch Baptist Church, members of the 283rd Combat Communications Squadron, and Liberty County Sheriff’s Dept. personnel.
