Alta Howard Obituary

Ludowici – Mary Alta Cowart Howard, 87, passed away Friday, April 26, 2019 at her residence after a short illness.  Born in Butler, GA, she lived in Long County all of her life.  She taught school for thirty years, mostly 2nd grade, in Wayne and Long Counties.  She served on the Long County Library Board for many years and was instrumental in the establishment of Long County’s current facility.  She was a member of Liberty-Long Retired Teachers and Order of the Eastern Star.  After retirement she enjoyed traveling, spending time with her grandchildren, relaxing at Dunns Lake with her family, reading and weekly canasta games.  Alta faithfully served her Lord as a member of Ludowici First Baptist Church for many years.  During that time she served as WMU Director, taught Sunday school, and sang in the choir. She was preceded in death by her husband of sixty-seven years, Dennis L. Howard, Jr., daughter, Sherry Cleveland, and grandchildren, Katie Cleveland and Eric Howard.

Survivors are her daughter, Lydia Golden of Columbia, SC; son and daughter-in-law, Roy and Debbie Howard of Ludowici; son-in-law, David Cleveland of Alma; brothers, David Cowart of Jacksonville, FL and Travis Cowart, Sr. of Bloomingdale; brothers-in-law and sister-in-law, Harris Howard of Jesup and Wayne and Gwen Howard of Hazlehurst; six grandchildren, Jessica Rasmussen (Dan), Meg Thompson (Bubba), Lauren Golden, Lori Cox (Justin), Mack Golden and Leah Golden; four great-grandchildren, Asher, Avery, Dennis and Madelyn; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, April 28 at 3 PM at First Baptist Ludowici with Rev. Eric Rentz and Rev. Travis Cowart officiating.

Burial will follow in Baggs Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Mack Golden, Mark Golden, Michael Cowart, Travis Cowart, Jr., David Cleveland, and Bubba Thompson.

Honorary pallbearers will be the Berean Sunday school of FBC Ludowici and members of the Canasta Card Club.

Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church.
