Alma Mitcham Obituary

Ludowici – Alma Smith Mitcham, 91, passed away Friday, April 13 at Coastal Manor in Ludowici.  She was a native of Tattnall County and was raised there and in Long County.  She was a member of the Ludowici First United Methodist Church and the Eula P. Theus Sunday school class.  She retired from the Long County Board of Education after teaching 32 years.  Her education began at Reidsville Elementary School and she graduated from Ludowici High School as class president.  She continued her education at Georgia Teachers College and followed with a Master’s Degree from Georgia Southern.  She was a former member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society, Long County Retired Teachers, and Long County Library Board.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Leslie G. Mitcham, Jr. and parents, Clarence and Ora Mae Tietgen Smith.

Survivors are her daughter and son-in-law, Marleen Zechman and Paul of Midway; son and daughter-in-law, Leslie G. (L. G.) Mitcham and Faye of Ludowici; two grandchildren, Leslie Zechman Heath and Trey and Molly Zechman Carter and Adam; one great-grandson, Hampton Lane Heath and another grandson Hagen Lee Heath due in August.  Several nieces and nephews also survive as well as many friends of all ages.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, April 15 at 3 PM at Ludowici First UMC with Rev. Andy Pusser officiating.  Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church.  Burial will be private.

Active pallbearers will be William Louie Smith, Jr., Louie Tietgen Smith, Leon Gordon, Leland Beecher, Joseph Murray, Steven Middleton, and Eddie Hendrix.

Honorary pallbearers will be the Eula P. Theus Sunday School Class, Miriam Murray, Mary Ann Mixon, Elizabeth Lake, and Judy Hughes.
